You showed him the whole phone last weekend. Today he can do none of it. That is not age. That is too much at once. The Late Adapter learns by doing one thing until it sticks. Then he moves on.
A lesson that covers six functions teaches zero.
Practical Techniques
One Task Per Session
Pick one thing only. Send a text. Join a video call. Download a photo. Work on that until he does it himself without help. Then stop. Next time, add one more thing. Progress looks slow. It is real.
Write It Down for Him
Make a short reference card he can use when you are not there. Number every step. Use plain words. Write “press the green button” not “tap the call icon.” Add a screenshot if you can. He can follow it alone. That is the point.
Make Clear That Mistakes Are Fine
Many Late Adapters are afraid of breaking the device. That fear stops them from trying. Say: “This phone is designed to survive mistakes. You cannot damage it by pressing the wrong button.” Then let him try while you are there.
Why This Works
Confidence comes from one success that lasts. He presses the button. It works. It still works next week. He trusts the process. The next step is easier because the last one held.
Do Not Take Over
If he is struggling, the reflex is to take the phone and do it for him. Resist that. Your job is to help him do it himself. Even if it is slow. Even if it takes three sessions. Independent capability is the point.
